It Adds Up!

Do you have a debt to pay off or need to save for a large purchase like a car?  Sometimes it seems like you can never reach that goal but if you think about saving in smaller amounts it can add up.

You can do things around your home like using compact flourescent lamps, turning the air conditioner up a degree, switch from cable to an antenna, purchase generic brands, use coupons, etc.

I started using coupons regularly last year and have been averaging about $19 per week on grocery savings and I only buy necessities (no more junk food or soft drinks).  I've kept $988 in my pocket this past year by clipping coupons plus I've now cut my grocery budget to $150 per month.  That's an extra $1950 in savings!

There's lots of other ways to save too.  Besides groceries, I also look for restaurant coupons, free admission deals, free games of bowling, discount tickets, etc.  I've earned Visa and store gift certificates for taking surveys, received full size samples of hair care and skin care products from product reveiw websites and won a cool party (with toys included) for my son from Hasbro.  You can cut back on your spending and still have a life!

$5 per day = $1825 a year
$10 per day = $ 3650 a year

There are so many ways to pinch your pennies and it all adds up!

Wonder How Coupons Work?

Have you wondered how coupons work and how the stores get paid when we use our coupons?  A coupon is like free money and at the end of the shift the cashier has to count the coupons as cash in order for the drawer to balance.  All the redeemed coupons then have to be collected and sent to headquarters to be processed and usually the stores will send them to a clearing house to be sorted by manufacturer, scannable UPC codes, damaged ones, etc.  Once the coupons are all sorted then the clearing house sends an invoice to the manufacturer.  The manufacturer will either send a check to the clearing house who then reimburses the store or the manufacturer reimburses the store directly.

I guess my point is that the stores do get reimbursed for the full amount of a good coupon.  They also get reimbursed for handling fees (usually $.08 cents per coupon) and postage, too.  I know there are some cashiers out there that try to make us feel like we are criminals and stealing from the stores but they are uneducated about the process.  The stores are doing just fine during these economically hard times.  Actually it is during these times when the stores make the most profit because more Americans are scrutinizing our habits of eating out thus spending more time at home and cooking dinner.  The use of coupons has increased over 25% last year!

Coupon Redemption Issues At Target Stores

In recent weeks, several couponers have noticed that they were not getting the full value of their coupons at Target Stores across the nation.  When questioned about the problem, Target says they are working on a fix and suggest that consumers return to the store to get the full coupon amount.  You can read a couple of good articles HERE and HERE.  My advise is to pay close attention when the cashier is scanning your coupons at any store and always keep a copy of the store's coupon policy with you.  Hopefully, Target will correct this problem soon.
